Frequently Asked Questions

Who can audition?

Any musicians from the ages of 13-18 may audition for the North Texas Youth Orchestra. We are a symphony orchestra and are not limited to only string musicians.

What are the audition requirements?

For the 2011-2012 Season, NTYO is holding YouTube auditions for interested musicians. 

Musicians are required to perform a solo piece of their choice (without accompaniment) that best showcases mastery of instrument and talent. In addition, string musicians are required to perform a 3-octave major scale (F, C, or G) with its natural minor scale. Brass and wind musicians are required to perform a 2-octave major scale (F, C, or G) with its natural minor scale. 

Once the audition video has been uploaded to YouTube, please send the link to info@northtexasyouthorchestra.org along with the application form so we can process and review your audition.

When/Where are rehearsals?

Our rehearsals are being held on Sunday afternoons from 2:00 p.m. through 4:30 p.m. at Bent Tree Bible Fellowship. Musicians are required to show up by 1:45 p.m. so rehearsals can start promptly at 2:00 PM.  There is one scheduled 15-minute break during the rehearsal.

When/Where are concerts?

Concerts for the 2011-2012 Season are held Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. The final full dress rehearsal starts at 5:30 p.m. Concerts for the 2011-2012 Season will be held on October 18, 2011, at Custer Road United Methodist Church, and on January 24 and March 27, 2012, at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church.

How much is tuition and what does it cover?

Membership tuition is $375 per season and covers venue rentals for performances and rehearsals, sectional rehearsals, all music and music folders, NTYO t-shirt, snacks (and dinner) prior to performances as needed, and other orchestra management expenses (paper copies, website, etc.).  We are accepting applications throughout the 2011-2012 Season and tuition per concert series is $125.

When is tuition due?

Tuition is due within 5 days from acceptance into the orchestra.

When will audition results be out?

Musicians who choose to audition via YouTube will be notified within 5 business days of their audition results.

How many rehearsals can a member miss?

Members are allowed one (1) excused absence due to illness, and one (1) excused absence due to school related activity provided documentation is submitted prior to the start of the rehearsal series. 

Members may NOT miss more than 2 rehearsals per rehearsal/concert series for any reason. Should a member miss more than 2 rehearsals, they will not be allowed to perform in the concert unless approved by the conductor. 

Musicians will give at least 48 hours notice in advance if a rehearsal will be missed. You must provide the notice via email at info@northtexasyouthorchestra.org or call the NTYO line at 214.702.NTYO (6896) only.  Except for emergencies or medical conditions, you will be marked as absent if at least a 48 hour notice is not given.

How big is the orchestra?

We have around 25 returning members for the 2011-2012 Season and are anticipating a total orchestra size of 40 members.

What attire is needed for concerts?
  • Ladies: Long black formal gown with sleeves (pants acceptable for cellos only) OR long, black school orchestra uniform with sleeves OR long black formal skirt with black blouse with sleeves (no sequins or beading).
  • Gentlemen: Black tuxedo, white tuxedo shirt, black bow tie, black cummerbund, black dress shoes and black socks. Men are responsible for purchasing their own black bow tie and cummerbund. School orchestra tuxedos are acceptable.
